Ndongo "Lucky" Diop has truly been a most valuable addition to the work of Milwaukee Public Theatre with his talent and skills in the area of African drumming. Lucky became familiar with the people of the Milwaukee area through his work with children and organizations that support our youth. Some of those organizations are: YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, Carroll College, Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, Girls Scouts, International Institute of Milwaukee, Ko-Thi Dance Company, Marquette University, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Milwaukee Public schools, Nefetari Dance Company, University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, Alliance Francaise, Summerfest, African World Festival, Rainbow Summer and Milwaukee Public Theater. In 1998, lucky founded "Ajula", a youth African Drum and Dance Troupe. With the co-sponsorship of Milwaukee Public Theater and the Parklawn YMCA, "Ajula" became the first professional youth African Drum and dance Troupe in Milwaukee. "Ajula" is a word from the Diola Tribe in Senegal, it means, "let's do it", "let's make it happen". In 2003, lucky created a new group called "Kassumai". "Kassumai" in the Diola tribe means, "May peace be with you". "Kassumai" is the first and unique Professional Youth Troupe in Milwaukee that plays traditional African music, Afro Jazz, Afro Hip-Hop, and World Music. The troupe's mission is to use music as a means to spread the spirit of love, peace and unity all around the World. |
